Here’s the Deal!
From talking with many of you over the last two years, I know that our community here at Private Practice from the Inside Out falls into two camps. You are either new to private practice (i.e. been in business for yourself <5 years) and are wanting to attract more clients or you have been in practice for quite a while and are ready to take your practice in a new direction or to a new level.
One piece of building your business that applies to both camps is the need to grow your online network. With that in mind, I’ve kept an eye out for how I can best help you make more online connections. This morning I’ve been inspired by Darren Rowse’ posts on ProBlogger where he has created a social media love-in. I have decided to host a similar event for all mental health professionals (including those in training) – it’s our own Social Media LoveFest for Mental Health Professionals and Coaches here at Private Practice from the Inside Out!
If you are looking to connect with other mental health professionals who are active in social media, then this is one way to do it. If you’ve been thinking about signing up for Twitter, now might be just the right time. If you’ve got a blog that needs more readers, this can definitely help you out. Do you want more friends on Facebook or LinkedIn? Right here is where you can meet them and know they are looking for you, too! All of us here want to build a bigger and stronger network.
Before you decide to participate in the Social Media LoveFest for Mental Health Professionals and Coaches, make sure you read the rules.
Here’s the Rules!
- Include your state (or if outside the United States include your country). That’s going to serve two purposes. It’s going to let us know where you are physically located and it’s going to help me screen for spam!
- Leave your links to your social media sites (no more than 7) in the comment section below.
- If you add your URL, your links will go live allowing others to immediately find you.
Here’s How To Make This Really Work for Everybody
This is only going to be successful if you make an effort to actually connect and interact with each other. As Darren pointed out, if you use this simply for self-promotion, this won’t work. It’s the same as in any other type of networking – show up prepared to be a resource and you’ll build a network one follower, one friend, one reader at a time. Tell your colleagues about the Social Media LoveFest for Mental Health Professionals and Coaches and help us build your network!
(And, here’s my links to get you started!)
You already know I’m in Colorado.

Greetings All,
My office is in west/central Denver. I would love to connect and expand my/your network.
I have experienced success with my blog, Creating Your Beyond, as potential clients read it and get a jump on builing rapport. My success with twitter has been to connect to people who are expert at their niche. Plus, I have met people on twitter and then had lunch with them if they were local.
Facebook has been effective for posting upcoming workshops. While with linkedin I have not really utilized it. I like networking face to face in person and through social media. Let’s connect!

Hey all!! My name is Megan Resig and I am a music therapist currently practicing in Rochester, NY, but am moving to Portland, Oregon in July to open a private practice with my business partner! So excited!

Tamara says
Hi, Megan! Welcome back to Private Practice from the Inside Out! I’m so tickled to see my music therapy contacts checking in here!
I have to confess . . . I have this little fantasy that I’ll be able to connect a music therapist and a school counselor and an art therapist and a dance / movement therapist and a mental health counselor / psychologist / social worker / addictions specialist to each state and then at least one in each discipline to every other country! I know, I know – I shouldn’t jinx this little effort but . . . perhaps you guys can help me by forwarding the announcements on to your own circles of influence?
Wouldn’t it be great to have all this networking AND build a community here that is even more information-rich for building and sustaining private practices around the globe?!
Megan, I’ll be dropping in to visit and chat with you soon. Thanks again for dropping in!
Megan says
Thanks for your reply, Tamara! I’m thrilled to be connecting with you!
Collaboration across disciplines is one thing that I’m extremely passionate about as well! I think we all have so much to offer and learn from one another and I’m hoping to really start to build those relationships as I build my practice! Your blog has been so incredibly inspiring – really great content that is applicable even for a newbie like me! 🙂
Thanks for this great idea and hosting this opportunity to network! Love it!
Tamara says
It’s my pleasure, Megan, and my passion to help you guys avoid some of the pitfalls that I stumbled into when I first went into private practice. Recognizing the strengths of our own individual disciplines in mental health and coaching and THEN recognizing the strengths of our colleagues who are in different disciplines serves us all well – both as providers and as consumers.
There is room at the table for all of us! I’m happy to support you on your journeys (as well as seek your support on my own). Welcome to the table, Megan! I look forward to networking with you!

Hi Tamara!
This is a great idea. It is wonderful to see a diversity of clinicians responding to the LoveFest!
I am new to private practice, as I just opened my group practice this month in Denver, Colorado. My group, Denver Counseling Options, provides a wide range of services to children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. I specialize in gay and lesbian issues, men’s issues, personal growth, and providing support fo family members of individuals with severe and persistent mental illness.
I shortly dabbled in blogging, but realized that I needed more direction and purpose first. I tried it a few months ago, but sometime later this year I plan to reconsider my foray into blogging.

By the way, as a co-chair for the Colorado Counseling Association Annual Conference for 2012, I am examining how our organization can utilize social media to improve the buzz and interest in our event. It is exciting how social media can be used to help nonprofits like CCA do a better job of communicating and reaching out to our constituents in Colorado. It is March 9-10th if anyone wants to mark your calenders!
Thanks!

Hey, Shaun! Thanks so much for showing up here and sharing your connections with us!
It would be great if Colorado Counseling Association and other professional associations for therapists and coaches also showed up here. What a great way to exponentially increase our connections! Parijat! After tweeting for a while with you, it’s good to connect with you here! And, gang . . . another savvy therapist identifying her niches – cross-cultural child and family therapy (Be sure to remember her when you are working with your bi-cultural clients!) with a particular interest in the South Asian community and she knows how to start a non-profit! Excellent marketing of your skills, Parijat, and modeling for the rest of us!
I’m looking forward to networking with you and your colleagues in California – By the way, your psychology students are welcome to join us here if they have an online presence:)! Happy to teach them how to network online.
Ann Becker-Schutte, Ph.D. says
Hi all,
I am a counseling psychologist in Kansas City, MO. I serve clients from both the Kansas & Missouri sides of our community, but I office on the Missouri side (simplest to work in the state where I live to avoid pesky double taxes). I’m tremendously excited about this project. As I’ve read the listings already, I’ve added everyone who included a Twitter link to a list:
http://twitter.com/#!/list/DrBeckerSchutte/smlovefest4mhprofs
If you follow the list, you don’t need to follow each individual person. For those posting after me, you can just @ message or DM me, and I will add you to the list.
I specialize in working with clients who are affected by serious or chronic health concerns–both the diagnosed patient and their care-takers. This includes a fair amount of grief work as well. I am a member of the LGBT Affirmative Therapists Guild of Kansas City, and work to make my office a safe space for clients of all cultural backgrounds.
Here’s where you find me on the web:

LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=9660779&trk=tab_pro
I am on Twitter almost daily, and I update the blog at least twice a week. I’m active in the #hcsm Tweetchat as well as a few others when I can be–many of my favorite Tweetchats happen at the same time as bedtime, so I miss them as often as I make it in. Facebook & LinkedIn aren’t really part of my world that much–maybe after I get my website and blog transitioned together. 🙂
Looking forward to getting to know all of you better!

Ann! Thanks so much for coming to the Social Media LoveFest for Mental Health Professionals and Coaches! Take note, gang – here’s another gal who knows how to stand out in the crowd. She’s not only noted her niche of working with clients (and their families) who deal with chronic illness . . . She’s also offered her Twitter site as a shortcut to the rest of us! Very savvy marketing!
Ann, I’m looking forward to networking with you and learning from you! Let me know if there’s anything I can do to support you and your work. Happy to do so and help you connect with others here and elsewhere!

Hi Everyone! I’m a music therapist in PA, serving Bucks County and parts of NJ. I am home with my little ones for now, keeping my practice very small. I love the idea of having this network while I back off work for a while. It’s really important to me to stay connected to other mental health care providers so as not to let time get away from me! I just found this site and it looks interesting. I usually do not join things without a good period of time to consider it and check it out. But, Tamara, you seem to be doing a great job. I have just started two blogs (even though I am not sure about what I am doing). One has practical and/or layman’s level ideas concerning mental health and positive psychology. The other is a blog about professional literature that I read. It is geared toward the professional therapist/counselor/ coach. I would be tickled pink if this group found then useful.

Hi, Ari, and thanks for joining us here at the Social Media LoveFest! Like you, I am not an impulsive kind of gal and think long and hard before I “join” or purchase or just sign up for things online. (My inbox is always overflowing!) However, I am so pleased that you’ve dropped in here to wander around my blog and join in on the LoveFest! This is turning out to be a very special opportunity that you – all of you – are creating.
I’ve just tossed out an idea, provided a space, and watched you guys RUN with it! From comments here and in my email inbox, I know that many of you are already making new 1:1 connections, brainstorming about new collaborations and projects, finding resources and information to support you both in and out of your private practice. THAT is EXCELLENT NETWORKING!
So, Ari, I hope you’ll find that to be true for you, too, here at Private Practice from the Inside Out. I look forward to connecting with you once I finish posing all of these LoveFest entries. It’s going to take me a liitle while but I have every intention of visiting each of your sites and I’ll be sure to let you know when I drop in. In the mean time, if there is anything that I can do to support you in building / strengthening your private practice, please don’t hesitate to ask! I’m only an email or a phone call away!
Looking forward to networking with you and learning about what you do! Please stay in touch!
Ari Hahn says
I was too focused on what I can contribute and forgot to mention my own field of interest. I help individuals and families who are overwhelmed with caring for a mentally ill loved one. I work in a coaching model allowing me to work with people from anywhere and with a flexible schedule. (It also helps me keep my teaching position.) If you are really curious I’m sure you will check out the sites….
Robert Herrmann-Keeling says
Tamara…what a neat idea (I think…I’m not so sure abut the “lovefest” part).
From what I can tell, it seems almost everybody here is from the west or mid-west. So I figured I ought to weigh in for Connecticut and New England. I’m an Adlerian psychologist (the ony one in Connecticut), founder of the LifeCourse Institute of Adlerian Psychology (here in CT), and founder of NECAP (New England Community of Adlerian Psycholgy). I’d be interested in chatting with others about Adlerian psychology and its relationships (theoretical and psychotherapeutic) to what we do.
I’d be interested in experiences of counselors/dtherapists/educators/ coaches who use Skype with clients over disdtances. For example, I have clients/students in California and London, and have found it exciting, rewarding, and challenging. (I limit myself to the ten-session program I developed called the “LifeCourse Effective Action Program” outlined in my web site.) Others’ comments weould be welcome.
(Oh yes, and by the way, I lived in Trinadad CO (age 4) during WWII, then in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota until I left for grad schol in Boston. So I have ties with many of you geographically!)
Tamara says
Welcome, Robert, to Private Practice from the Inside Out! I’m so glad you decided to represent the Northeast! But, I’m even happier to find an Adlerian in the gang! When I moved to Colorado, I found that we Adlerians are few and far between here. It’s a whole different ballgame! I’m really looking forward to dropping in to your site . . . . Unfortunately, no one else can find you unless you drop back in here and leave in a comment where they can find you online. Please do so so that our Social Media Lovefest can actually be useful to you!
Kitty Davidson says
Hello! My name is Kitty Davidson and I have a private practice in Lakewood Colorado. I offer couples and individual counseling. I use a variety of techniques to help explore my clients world. I use EMDR for a variety of issues, performance, sports performance, anxiety, depression, and trauma just to name a few.
I have experience working with anxiety, depression, bipolar, healthy sexuality, relationships, sexual abuse, family issues, LGBT issues, and life transitions. I have experience with court ordered therapy for both juveniles and adults.
I believe that insight into our selves can be achieved through our experiences. In the therapeutic process, I use a variety of mediums for exploration. Mindfulness is not just thinking but it is about bringing awareness to everyday activities and thoughts. This can be achieved through the therapeutic conversation, art, role plays and a mind body connection. I believe becoming mindful of our minds, heart and body is key to becoming a more authentic self.
Tamara says
Hi, Kitty! You’re in my own back door here in Colorado so I hope we have a chance to meet face to face later this year. Thanks so much for checking out my blog here at Private Practice from the Inside Out and joining our Social Media LoveFest for Mental Health Professionals and Coaches!
You’ve mentioned several areas that could easily position you in a niche so I’m thinking that if your practice is not as busy as you would like it to be, you’ve got great potential to create that! However, if you want folks to be able to find you online, you will need to drop back in and leave URLs for those locations. I hope you’ll do so that we can continue to grow our online community here! I look forward to networking with you!

Greetings everyone from beautiful Longmont, CO!
I came upon this website through a sharing that Megan at Mundana Music Therapy made on Facebook. Funny how that works, eh?
I’m a music therapist and psychotherapist in the Boulder County area, but I work with a hospice and provide music therapy services to terminally-ill patients and their families throughout the Metro Denver area. However, with my private practice, SoundWell Music Therapy, I specialize in mental health and well-being for all ages because I believe that quality of life shouldn’t be something only to be taken into consideration when one is at end-of-life.
I consider myself to be somewhat tech-savvy, although I’m looking to make more connections with others and to help create community.
So… here’s where I can be found:

I also provide small group fees as well as training and retreats for larger group – both face to face as well as long distance. Talk to me about what you are looking for and we can figure out what might work best for you! I look forward to working with you!

Hi, Steven! I’ve been looking for forensic psychologists to join us! Where are you guys?! I’m happy to meet you and so happy to help you network here at the Social Media LoveFest for Mental Health Professionals!
You are indeed the first forensic psychologist to join us and, gang, take note . . . . Steven has done an excellent job of distinguishing himself at this LoveFest by identifying his niche not just as forensic psychology but as one who treats and assesses acting-out adolescent males and difficult families! Nice marketing job, Steven! Is it safe to assume that you would not mind consulting long distance? Yours is a special niche for sure! And, I may have opportunity to refer to you in the future.
I hope you’ll wander around on Private Practice from the Inside Out and pick up a few tips. When I can be of help either online or off, I hope you’ll let me know!
Steven Brownlow says
Tamara, I would be happy to consult if needed. And I’m not so sure it’s great marketing as just knowing what I do well.
Tamara says
Yes, Steven, but knowing what you do well – and what you do not do well – are the first two steps to solid marketing:)! I’ll keep you in mind when needing forensic consults for sure!
Have a great weekend!
Jill Osborne says
Steven, Tamara once told me once to start saying “I have a private practices,” not just that I’m building one, it’s in there Steven, and I am in the same boat, just getting my foot into private practice. It’s so exciting.
Tamara says
Hi, Jill! Hey – I just want to drop in here to clarify what I said . . . . I was not suggesting that you tell folks that you have multiple private practices – unless, of course, you really do. That could be considered false advertising. What I said is that if you find yourself torn between multiple niches, it’s probably more effective to focus on just one area at a time (knowing that you will have time later on to refocus on a second niche and, even further down the road, a third niche.)
It is important though to watch your language – both for marketing purposes and for risk management. What you don’t want to do is trip yourself up with false advertising.
Linda Esposito (@TalkTherapyBiz) says
Hi Tamara–
Great idea! Wow–looks like you’ve got quite an impressive list of psychotherapists…Love it:).
I would be very appreciative if you could make a comprehensive list so we could all see and connect w one another…like a directory, maybe?
OK–
I’m a LCSW w a private practice in Pasadena, CA. I also have extensive experience working as a psychiatric social worker for the Los Angeles Unifed School District.
My blog specialties are psychoeducation for those wanting help with depression/anxiety, but are not able/ready to try the traditional 1:1 model, at present. I’m a fan of a direct, honest, and humorous approach, which alienates some in our profession, but hey, there is no ‘everyone.’
My other passion is parenting, with an emphasis on….drum role,…teenagers. I happen to love working with teens–the surlier, the better is my motto:P.

Hi, Linda! I’m so tickled you could join us here for the Social Media LoveFest. I think a comprehensive list would be a fabulous idea . . . . I believe you are the first social worker from Pasadena, California on the list! Yea! And, I’m loving your comment about the clients you love to work with – “teens – the surlier, the better!” FABULOUS! I feel certain that you will gain some readers to your blog and find some terrific folks here to network with so . . . have at it!

Currently, I am a Counselor-In-Training. I work undersupervision in a private practice. I am working toward licensure in Missouri. My focus is interracial marriages/relationships and families. Relating to one another in intimate relationships has it’s own complications. When cultural differences are added relationships can become more complex.
My goal is to help couples and families recognize the enriching opportunities that their cultural differences present in order to build healthy families and children with healthy views about their identity.
Okay, so I am new to networking. I’ve avoided it in the past because I was told that in networking you have to “Sell yourself” (argh, not me). What you are doing here feels really good and natural. So thank you again for all you do. I’m always interested in reading more.

Brenda! Welcome to Private Practice from the Inside Out! Students and Counselors-in-Training are certainly welcome and are under-represented here in our Social Media LoveFest for Mental Health Professionals and Coaches! (I’m so glad I’ve left this open for you and your peers just a little longer!)
YOU have a fabulous and much-needed niche identified already. Take note, gang! How many of you know another professional who has identified themselves working with interracial / cross-cultural couples and family issues?! You win the prize, in my mind, Brenda, for standing out from the crowd! Nice job!
And, as for “selling” yourself . . . . I should really write a blog post on this but for the short term, you and I don’t need to sell ourselves. We need to be building relationships (and what counselor doesn’t already know how to do that?) and we need to be looking for opportunities within those relationships to let other folks see / understand what we do! It’s much more akin to education than it is to sales.
Brenda, again, I’m so glad to have you join us! I hope you won’t just lurk and learn but also join in the conversations here. We can learn from you, too!
Tim Goode says
Tamara, I think following and interacting with clinicians as we grow as a group is a good idea. I am a LMFT in Alabama. Tamara says
Tim! I’m so very glad to have you here representing Alabama! Where are those Alabama colleagues of yours?! I think you are the first to show up here. I’m getting swamped with the LoveFest gang so I may need to shut the doors at the end of the week. If you’ve got others that want to join us, let them know.
Tim, I look forward to networking with you and learning from you!

TS.
Your Love Fest rocked and still rocking. I WILL come back to view the post and comments again…again….again. You give me ideas for a similar project.
Hugs, Bb
Tamara says
Hi, Brenda! Yes, the LoveFest IS STILL ROCKING and I’m wearing out! Thinking this may be the last week before I close the door so if you know of others who want in . . . . Send them my way!

Hi, Tamara and all of the talented therapists to date.
I love social media. I have worked to start a blog, though it is always “on my back burner”. I have been encouraged to write a book by many folks, but the thought is daunting with my private practice and all of the paperwork for many sources I am required to maintain. I do have a webpage and have been relishing the thought of reorganizing it (thus my search here and elsewhere with professionals in the art and decor world that I love).
I am a member of the Texas Society for Clinical Social Work which has brought its website into this century this spring.
TSCSW.org
my webpage is: maryswansonlcsw@brownwood-therapist.com
I am on linkedin as well, though not so much with my profession.
I recently attended an ewomennetwork in Austin https://www.facebook.com/eWomenNetworkAustin?sk=wall
Have a professional Facebook page: Mary Swanson, LCSW https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mary-Swanson-LCSW/130189713683974
I live in a very small town and so appreciate ideas for marketing.
Thank you Tamara for your positive wonderful resourceful self!
Tamara says
Mary!!! I’m so glad you made it here before we close the doors on the Social Media LoveFest! Thanks so much for taking time to introduce yourself here. As you can see, we have quite a collective growing here! I’m launching a FREE Webinar later today and trying to catch up on the LoveFest folks, too.
It may take me a few weeks to get to you and and everyone else but I promise . . . I’m going to be dropping in to chat and network. I hope you will do the same and send your colleagues this way quick! The doors to the LoveFest close at the end of this week!
Cindy Ricardo says
Hi Tamara! What a wonderful idea! I’ve been looking for ways to network with other professionals in related fields as it can get lonely out here! I’ve been blogging for a while and I use my facebook page to post ways to practice mindfulness in daily life at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Living-Mindfully/146958998648430 Hopefully I’ll connect with others and share the love!
Tamara says
Hi, Cindy! I’m so glad you’ve found us! I’m looking forward to helping you build your business and connect with others here, too! I hope you’ll drop back in often to chat! I look forward to networking with you and learning from you. Love the mindfulness niche!

Hi, Lisa Marie! Thanks so much for joining us here at the Social Media LoveFest! And, welcome to Private Practice from the Inside Out! I look forward to networking with you and helping you grow your business connections, too!
If you want to increase the likelihood that folks will reach out to you, you are welcome to drop back in and leave even more info about you, your interests, and your work. That’s true for all of you here at the Social Media LoveFest for Mental Health Professionals and Coaches, too!
Remember, this is only going to be successful for each of you if you take the time to reach out back channel to your other colleagues here . . . by reading and commenting on their blogs and websites, following them on Twitter, friending them on Facebook, and connecting with them on LinkedIn. Don’t be shy! By joining us here at the Social Media LoveFest, they are saying that they want to increase their own networks and help you to do the same. Did I say DON’T BE SHY!?

I intended to . . . just haven’t gotten there! I’m so glad, too! I’m trying to plow my way through the LoveFest gang to check out each of your sites. It’s going to take me a while but i will get to you.
In the mean time, make yourself at home here and start checking everybody out including me right here at Private Practice from the Inside Out! If there is anything that I can do to help you get better connected or to help you grow your practice, I hope you’ll let me know!

Also people should know what is posted here is archived into google. I just searched myself and found my comments. Another reason to always be on one’s best behavior.
Tamara Suttle says
Oh, Cathy! I’m so glad you dropped back in so folks can find you! Now I’m learning from you! I knew to be on good behavior on line but what I didn’t think about was being able to track my comments down on other people’s websites simply by googling! How smart are you?! Thanks so much for a great reminder – especially appropriate here on the Social Media LoveFest post!
And, did you also notice that you are now able to keep up with running conversations on my blog by checking the little box at the bottom or your comment? If you do so, you will receive email notices in your inbox when someone adds to the conversation.

Hi all! Not sure if anyone else out there is in Chicago, but we are a new holistic counseling practice. I’m working on IL licensure while interning with Chicago Center for Holistic Counseling. We are on Facebook, and I’m listed under Jen Kidwell Meyer, Psychotherapist on Facebook as well. Thanks Tamara!
Tamara Suttle says
Hi, Jen! Thanks for dropping in here at Private Practice from the Inside Out and joining the Social Media LoveFest! I hope you’ll get busy reaching out to all the folks that have already joined us here and make some new friends. It’s been a terrific resource for me and others already! I noticed that you did not leave any links to make it easy for others to find you. Please do take time to do so. It will drastically increase the contacts that you make and the traffic you receive.
Looking forward to networking with you, Jen! Happy to have a colleague in Chicago!
