As more and more therapists in private practice begin blogging, I increasingly get questions like “Should I include my blog on my resume?” or “Is blogging something I want to include in my professional bio?”
The short answer is “YES . . . MAYBE!”
Here are some things to consider before adding blogging to your resume / professional bio.
- Is your blog well-branded?
- Does your blog help you stand out from your peers?
- Does your blog avoid offending people?
- Do you keep spam and inappropriate commenting out of your blog?
- Have you avoided posting anything inappropriate elsewhere online? (It’s fairly easy to locate the rest of your social media profiles once I have the URL to your blog.)
- Are your grammar and writing skills on par with other professionals?
- Are your successes evident in your blog?
- Have you been blogging for a while?
- Does your blog look polished?
- Are the images on your blog professional in appearance? (That means no beach shots, runny nosed toddler tantrums, or party photos either)
- Is your blog focused on a topic that is appropriate for and related to your professional work?
- Do search engines find you easily?
- Do you have a loyal following of commenters or subscribers?
- Does your blog demonstrate commitment and dedication?
- Is your blogging ethical? (That means no plagarism, no violations of confidentiality, etc.)
- Do you post under your legal / professional name (rather than anonymously or under a pen name)?
If you can answer “yes” to all of the above, then your blog may very well support your professional image and reputation.
If you can’t answer “yes” to all of the above (or just need help in getting your blogging started off with a good foundation), you may be interested in joining me for the next round of my 4-week series BlogStart for Therapists!
On Monday, I’ll be opening up registration and would love to show you how I have built this blog to attract over 10,000 (unique) visitors every month. I hope you’ll join me!
And, if you know of things I’ve left off my list to consider when making the decision whether or not to add your blog to your resume, please drop in below and share them!

Tamara, this is a great point. I just thought about this related to guest posting. Great checklist!

Yep, guest posting, can look really great on a resume – especially if you’ve been invited to post on blogs that have large followings. That’s one of the reasons I invite guest posts here. I know it can boost your credibility and your visibility, too.

Thanks for sharing this! I was actually just pondering it this weekend and went for it! Now on my CV 🙂
