Tim Berry, President of Palo Alto Software, wrote this blog post, 3 Marketing Truths I Wish I’d Known Sooner. It got me to thinking about some of the marketing truths that I wish I had known sooner . . . like these . . . .
- Don’t slack off on your marketing efforts when your client load is full. In fact, that’s exactly when you should amp it up!
- It’s easier to market when your practice is full and you are feeling good about yourself than when you are sitting in the office with time to spare.
- Meeting a colleague’s need (or, for that matter, any other potential referral source’s need) is the best type of marketing.
- Successful marketing is determined by the quality of your relationships rather than number of your relationships.
I’m sure you’ve got your own stories and truths to tell about marketing. Care to share them with me here?

this is a helpful reminder. for me, the most helpful tip is that i put it on my schedule! it has to be part of my week.

Hi, Dana! And, welcome! This is such a great tip – if it’s not on my calendar it never gets done!
Hey, Dana – I’ve been to your website several times . . . trying to get into your blog but . . . can’t get in. I hope you read this and check on it. Your photography is terrific!
Hope you’ll be back often and comment.

Here’s a bunch off the top of my head:
-Those who are most effective at marketing will be more successful.
-If you don’t believe in yourself, regardless of how much marketing you do, you will likely fail.
-The success of your practice will not be based on “hoping it takes off”. Effective Action will determine your success.
-Successful people make a decision to succeed and then find out how to do that.
-You must invest in your yourself and your business.
-Marketing is the engine of your business, when you stop marketing, your client load will surely decrease.
-Marketing takes knowledge, skill, repetition and lots of persistence and patience!
-Know that you will fail sometimes (and sometimes more than sometimes at first). Pick yourself up and figure out what to do next.
-Being a top notch clinician will not ensure your success.
-Marketing requires planning and strategy. “Hit and miss” marketing tactics won’t work in the long hall.
-Marketing requires vision. Planning ahead and keeping the big picture in mind will help you succeed.
Ok, better stop there for now. 🙂

Hi, Juliet! Welcome back and thanks for joining the conversation!
You are so right with every one of these but I particularly resonate with “Being a top notch clinician will not ensure your success.” I was stunned by this one early on (and just about starved to death before learning the marketing skills necessary to jumpstart my practice).
And, for those of you reading this, make sure you click on Juliet’s website. She, too, offers thoughtful discourse on how to market your private practice. I’ve got her in my feed reader and you should, too.

I love this website/blog. I have found that creating relationships and meeting with people face to face is my most effective marketing tool.
I have taken a little breather from marketing this summer. I have been so burned out. However, I’m ramping up new “media” packets for old and new referral sources which will include a flyer I created for a new service we’re offering.
I’m on vacation now and I’d like to get my marketing ideas and plans in more of a strategy and timeline. I’m not quite sure how to do that. I’ll visit Juliet’s website. Thank you all for the discussion.
